Alfred Sisley. Two Autograph Letters Signed.

    More Information:

    1) ALS. "A. Sisley." Two pages in French, 7" x 9", Moret-sur Loing, April 21, 1898. In this letter addressed to "Monsieur," an unnamed correspondent, Sisley includes comments about pointillism as well as potential fraudulent paintings [English translation], "To say a painter practices pointillism isn't a criticism, it's a fact: pointillism is a quasi-mechanical procedure that results in an almost complete absence of error. As far as my work is concerned, that is not my method. It is probable that your good faith was taken advantage of and you were shown canvases that are not mine but were attributed to me. The significance of the word [illegible] shocks you. In fact I have no reason whatsoever to inspect your independence as a critic." 2) ALS. "A. Sisley." Two pages, 7" x 9', n.p.; n.d. This letter is addressed to "Mon cher Monsieur Scholl" [Aurélien Scholl (1833-1902), a French author and journalist], in which Sisley is bringing his (Sisley's) exhibition at Durand-Ruel to Scholl's attention.

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) was a French Impressionist landscape painter.

Condition: Letters have horizontal and vertical folds; some toning and edge wear; otherwise good.
