Alexis Claude Clairaut. Autograph Letter Signed.
"Clairaut." Four page bifolium, in French, 7" x 8.5", Paris; July 12, 1744. In this letter to an unnamed correspondent, Clairaut expresses his shame and offers numerous apologies and various reasons for his delayed response. He compliments highly the recipient on a mathematical essay he had sent and assures the recipient that he will transmit it, either in its essential sections or in its entirety, to the Academy, presumably the French Academy of Science. Clairaut also offers positive comments on another paper by a Mr. Calendrin that the recipient had sent him, and then asks if the recipient and Calendrin would review something he has written. Alexis Claude Clairaut (1713-1765) was a French mathematician, astronomer, and geophysicist. He was a prominent Newtonian whose work helped to establish the validity of the principles and results that Sir Isaac Newton had outlined in the Principia of 1687. In mathematics, he is also credited with Clairaut's equation and Clairaut's relation. He was elected to the French Academy of Science in 1731, the Royal Society of London in 1737, as well as several other scientific organizations.

Condition: Very slight foxing, usual folds, and remains of a paper tab on the top and bottom right hand edge where the letter was attached to another surface at one time; overall very good.
