    Alexis Claude Clairaut. Autograph Document Signed. "Clairaut lé Cadet" [Clairaut the Youngest]. Three pages (of a bifolium) in French, 7.5" x 9.25", n.p.; August 12, 1729. Document entitled "Proposition nouvelle de geometrie Elementaire" [New Proposal of Elementary Geometry], with three geometric drawings. Clairaut's proposal is divided into two cases along with a corollary and a note. His closing note begins with the statement "From this theorem we draw a very simple way of finding an infinity of rectangles in the reason of two given lines without using the compass." Alexis Claude Clairaut (1713-1765) was a French mathematician, astronomer, and geophysicist. He was a prominent Newtonian whose work helped to establish the validity of the principles and results that Sir Isaac Newton had outlined in the Principia of 1687. In mathematics, he is also credited with Clairaut's equation and Clairaut's relation. He was elected to the French Academy of Science in 1731, the Royal Society of London in 1737, as well as several other scientific organizations.

    Condition: The document has toning at the edges, a horizontal fold, with slight tears at the outside edges; a small paper loss at the center crease and small tear at the intersection of crease and fold; crease has been professional reinforced by tissue, which is hardly noticeable; some foxing; otherwise good.
