    Description

Albert Einstein. Typed Letter Signed. "A. Einstein." One page in German, 8.75" x 11.25", Berlin; November 20, 1919. The letter, with single small holograph correction, addressed to Gabriele Rabel (1880-1963), an Austrian physicist and botanist, Einstein writes on behalf of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics (now the Max Planck Institute), of which he was the first director, denying Rabel an Institute grant for an experiment.

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics alongside quantum mechanics.

Condition: Letter has a horizontal and a vertical fold; is very slightly dulled with age, with a trace amount of uneven toning at front; tiny splits starting at either end of horizontal fold, foot of vertical fold; a handful of specks of foxing scattered at recto and verso of leaf; otherwise good.

"It seems to me almost impossible, by the method you have suggested, to induce such a concentration of channel radiation that a generation of light by mutual collisions of the beam particles would be noticeable. This conviction makes it impossible for me to advocate the granting of funds for this attempt by the Directorate of the K.-W.-Institut. A calculation of the frequency of clashes will certainly convince you of the futility of such a trial."
