[Sergei Eisenstein]. [Alfred E. Green, recipient]. Original Certificate of Honor, presented at the first Soviet Film Festival. Moscow: Cinema Office of the People's Commissars of the U. S. S. R., 1935. Folio folded sheet. Approximately 12 x 18 inches total, certificate text appears on one portion, approximately 12 x 9 inches. Text in Cyrillic (contemporary English language translation laid-in). This certificate was awarded to the American film Gentlemen Are Born (1934), directed by Alfred E. Green and starring Franchot Tone. Signed by film jury members, including Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Boris Shumyatsky. Some toning, mild thumbsoiling to certificate. Very good. Housed in modern quarter morocco folding chemise. Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948) was a pioneering Russian film director, famous for developing the montage technique. He is most famous for his films Alexander Nevsky (1938), Ivan the Terrible (1944), and the classic Battleship Potemkin (1925).

Jury Chairman Boris Shumyatsky (1886-1938) was appointed by Stalin to be the de facto head of Soviet film production in 1930. Shumyatsky's job was to make sure that all films produced in the Soviet Union reflected the official party line. Ironically, Shumyatsky viciously attacked Eisenstein for years (even preventing Eisenstein from completing any films during his reign). Shumyatsky fell from grace in 1938 and was executed. At that point, Eisenstein completed Alexander Nevsky (1938), which restored his reputation with the ruling party. It is unusual that both men signed the same document.
