Extremely Rare Work With the Earliest Known Map of the Republic of Texas

Manual E. de Gorostiza. Correspondencia Que Ha Mediado Entre La Legacion Extraordinaria De Mexico Y El Departamento De Estado De Los Estados Unidos Sobre El Paso Del Sabina Por Las Tropas Que Mandaba El General Gaines. Philadelphia: [no publisher indicated], 1836. First edition. Spanish text. xxi, 59 pp. Earliest map of the Republic of Texas used as frontispiece. The pamphlet with original light tan wraps has been expertly bound into marbled paper wraps. Trivial light scattered foxing and a small closed tear at the edge of page 59, else a near fine copy offered in a custom quarter leather over marbled boards slipcase.

This pamphlet was written and published by Manuel Gorostiza, a special envoy of Mexico to the United States, attacking the good faith of the United States in sending its troops under the command of General Edmund Pendleton Gaines across the Sabine as far as Nacogdoches. Needless to say his pamphlet was not popular in Washington. Subsequent editions were published in Mexico but this first edition, with its historic map, remains elusive to collectors.
