Extending across the Great Desert to the Tenth Degree of Northern Latitude, and from Kouka in Bornou , to Sackatoo, the Capital of the Fellatah Empire... London: John Murray, 1826. First edition. Quarto (10.625 x 8.125 inches; 269 x 207 mm.). xlviii (i.e. lxviii), 335, [1, blank]; [4], 138, [139]-269 (appendix), [1, printer's note], [2, list of plates] pages; frontispiece and thirty-six engraved plates, plus one folding map, inserted throughout with six in-text vignettes. Contemporary diced calf boards, rebacked to style with fragments original spine laid down, recornered; spine with five raised bands, incorporating the six original compartments, stamped and ruled in gilt, with original gilt-lettered morocco label; boards double-ruled in gilt and tooled in blind; board edges and turn-ins tooled in gilt. Page edges sprinkled brown with a pattern in negative space; plain endpapers. Boards somewhat worn with light discoloration to the rear board; narrow strip of biopredation to the original spine label; board edges worn with most gilt tarnished or worn away; corners bumped. Top edge of text dust-soiled; hinges repaired; light offsetting opposite plates; some spotting (possible smallish old dampstain), offsetting and light edgewear to folding map. Very good.
