By the River Niger, in the Steam-Vessels Quorra and Alburkah, in 1832, 1833, and 1834. London: Richard Bentley, 1837. First edition. Two volumes. Octavo. [xvi], 451, [1]; [viii], 447, [1] pages. Six plates and one map. Half olive-green leather (morocco?) over marbled paper-covered boards; spine stamped in blind andgilt with four raised bands making five compartments; red morocco spine label. All edges trimmed and sprinkled reddish-brown. Mild wear to edges, joints and spine ends, softening of corners; some rubbing to boards, slight scratches at spine. Dust-soiling to top edge of text block. Occasional scattered foxing, discoloration throughout; title-pages faintly offset onto frontispieces. Very good, almost near fine. An account of the 1832-1834 expedition into the African interior, a "technical and exploration venture" to the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers: "Of the forty-eight white men who began the venture in 1832, only nine survived when it ended in  1834"--DNB. Laird and Oldfield were two of these nine; Laird would become known as the first European to voyage up the Benue. William Allen was also among the survivors.
