A First Edition and a Second Printing of
    Lynd Ward's Fantastic Woodcuts

Lynd Ward. Mad Man's Drum. [and:] God's Man. New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, [1930, 1929]. Mad Man's Drum is a first edition, God's Man is a second printing. Each is illustrated with over 130 woodcuts. Octavos. Unpaginated. Original quarter black cloth over illustrated paper over boards with paper spine labels. Spines of both volumes slightly leaning. Corners and spine ends lightly rubbed. Spine labels toned. Rubbing to boards and edges. Very good.
While in first grade, Illinois-born Lynd Ward (1905-1985) decided to become an artist after discovering that his name, written backwards, spelled "draw." In 1929, he used the visual concept of telling an entire story using only woodcut illustrations. These graphic novels, God's Man and Mad Man's Drum- the first of their kind published in the U.S.-were four subsequent tales told through only woodcuts. Ward often combined his artistic innovations with political themes addressing labor, class, and racial issues. He also illustrated more than 100 children's books. From the Pre-Raphaelite Collection of William E. Fredeman.
