Complete with five maps (two in pocket), sixteen folding photogravure plates, two photogravure panoramas, and 212 inter-textual illustrations. Title pages printed in red and black. Publisher's dark green cloth, pictorial centerpieces (the Stella Polare cutting through ice) stamped in gilt, smooth spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt. Rubbing to boards and slight wear to extremities, affecting the gilt lettering ("Hutchison & Co.") at the foot of the spines. Some internal wear to the endpapers. Overall a very good, clean copy. A handsome copy of Amedeo's comprehensive account of his Italian expedition's attempt to reach the North Pole by dog sled in 1899, copiously illustrated with remarkable photo-engraved plates and illustrations.
