Rare First Edition, Second Issue of
    Beethoven's Symphony No. 4

Ludwig van Beethoven. 4me Grande Grande Simphonie en si [flat sign] Majeur (B dur) Composée et Dédiée á Monsr. Le Compte d' Oppersdorf par Louis van Beethoven. Op. 60. Partition. Bonn et Cologne: N. Simrock, [1823]. First edition, second issue of the full score of Beethoven's fourth symphony, fully engraved. Tall octavo. 195 pages. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Titles stamped in gilt on re-backed spine. Scuffing and wear to the edges of the boards; marbled boards scuffed and rubbed; spine re-backed as noted; endpapers refreshed; contents with light uniform toning, else very good condition. "The Symphony No. 4, in B-flat, written in 1806, is a gentle idyll. In style and structure it is nearer to the Second Symphony than to the Eroica. It makes no pretense at grandiloquence or sublimity. It is gentle, lovable, peaceful throughout. Among its finest pages are the extended introduction to the first movement, in which a dramatic atmosphere is built up, and the almost religious song chanted by the first violins in the second movement" (Cross, I: 58). Robert Schumann alluded to the Fourth Symphony's chronological position between the titanic "Eroica" and Fifth Symphonies when he called it a "slender Greek maiden between two Norse giants." This is the first edition, second issue of the full score, preceded only by editions of the individual instrumental parts. Kinsky-Halm, 145. [Hoboken 282; Hirsch, iv 300a; Kinsky, p.145]
