    More Information:

Richeome (1544-1625) French humanist and Jesuit. In his time, he was called the "French Cicero."  He wrote in 1602 this defense of the Jesuit order against Estienne Pasquier's "Catechisme des Jesuits, ou Examen de leur doctrine".

"In 1603, Richeome came to the defence of the order. he argued that Pasquier and the other enemies of the Jesuits were "the most noteworthy caluminators seen in France since Luther gave birth to monsters extreme in their impudence, ignorance, and malice." He charged them with being "atheists, machiavellians, and other soulless men, associated and sworn to fight against us, and through us the Catholic religion." In this wholly political tract, Richeome again echoed the language of the characterization of Protestantism as devilish heresy that was so common in Catholic civil war propaganda." [Jonathan L. Pearl, The Crime of Crimes: Demonology and Politics in France, 1560-1620. 1999]
