    More Information:

"This seven volume work was published in 2 editions between 1885 and 1891, and contains 421 chromolitho plates. Lord Lilford felt that a book was needed with good plates at a cost which more people could afford than the books then in existence. He commissioned J. G. Keulemans to do the illustrations, after he was unable to procure the services of Joseph Wolf. Sadly, ill health prevented Keulemans from finishing the work, although he completed 125 plates, the last of which he drew (Green Woodpecker) whilst ill in bed. Lord Lilford then had to seek other artists..." (Peter Tate, A Century of Bird Books, p. 31).

"George Ludge did six plates for Lilford... Thorburn was responsible for nearly two-thirds of the plates" (Jackson, Bird Illustrations).
