Description

The Famed Second Folio Edition of Shakespeare's Works

William Shakespeare. [Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies. Published according to the true originall copies. The second impression. London: Printed by Tho. Cotes, for Robert Allot, and are to be sold at the signe of the Blacke Beare in Pauls Church-yard, 1632]. The Second Folio edition of Shakespeare's plays. Lacking the first four leaves, including the title-page and Droeshout's engraved portrait of Shakespeare (text here begins with Milton's "Upon the Effigies" and "An Epitaph" on recto and with verso blank). Also lacks leaves e3 (page 55/56 in "The First Part of King Henry the Fourth," with a later blank leaf inserted in its place) and ddd4 (page 419, containing the last part of "Cymbeline). Woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces. Text printed within rules. Bound to style in modern full brown levant morocco, covers double-ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, modern marbled endleaves and blanks. "Effigies" leaf is mounted, e4 (leaf 331) repaired with outer margin strengthened, and leaves d3, y1 and final eighteen leaves with lower corners renewed with some loss of text. Approximately fifteen leaves with other repairs or minor restoration, approximately two leaves with marginal tears (one with an inner marginal tear, one with an outer marginal tear), approximately four leaves with small holes, with minor text loss. Browned and stained throughout, with some occasional ink or pencil notations and markings. Upper margins a bit close, with some occasional minor loss of text. Overall, a good working copy.

The Second Folio contains the first appearance in print of John Milton. His anonymous work, "An Epitaph on the admirable Dramatike Poet, W. Shakespeare," composed about two years before the publication of the Second Folio, while Milton was still a student at Cambridge, appears on the "Effigies" leaf.

    Greg III, pp. 1113-1116. Jaggard, p. 496. Pforzheimer 906. STC 22274.
