William Morris (British, 1834-1896) was a well-known textile designer, artist, translator, poet and socialist.
In December 1884, William Morris founded the Socialist League. At its full height, the League had six branches, with contacts in Scotland and Ireland. The branch of the League which met at Morris's house was called the Hammersmith Socialist Society. The Commonweal was the League's monthly newspaper. The banner for The Hammersmith Socialist Society, which published the latter three books, was designed by Walter Crane. In 1890, Morris left the League. His Hammersmith Branch broke off to become the independent Hammersmith Socialist Society. (Forman). From the Pre-Raphaelite Collection of William E. Fredeman.
