The First Complete Edition of Petronius' Novel, Satyricon

Titus Petronius Arbiter. Satyricon, Cum Fragmento Nuper Tragurii reperto. Amsterdam: Joannes Blaeu, 1669. [bound with:] Titus Petronius Arbiter. Integrum Fragmentum, Ex antiquo codice Tragvriensi Romae exscriptum cum Apologia Marini Statilli I. V. D. Amsterdam: Joannes Blaeu, 1670. Approximately 7.5 x 4.25 inches. Octavo. [xxxiv], 558, [42, Index], 168, [8, Index], [viii], 70, [32] pages. With the engraved title by Romeyn de Hooghe. Complete. Nineteenth-century full brown calf, covers triple-ruled in gilt, spine tooled and ruled in gilt in compartments, burgundy morocco gilt lettering label, five raised bands, gilt board edges, blind turn-ins, marbled endleaves. Spine slightly sunned and worn, some wear to corners, panels rubbed, two small bookplates from previous owners, some light occasional thumbsoiling in text. Overall, a near fine copy. Satyricon is not always bound with the Fragmentum. This novel, one of the few surviving Roman novels, and a very rare look into the lives of the lower classes of Rome. Many consider this to be the earliest extant novel of Western civilization. Brunet IV, 574. Schweiger II, p. 723.
