    First Edition of Hardy's Trumpet-Major, in the Original Cloth

    Thomas Hardy. The Trumpet-Major. A Tale. London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1880. First edition. Three small octavo volumes (approximately 4.75 x 7.25 inches). vi, 296; vi, 276; [ii], vi, 260 pages (no initial blank in volumes one or two). Publisher's red diagonally-ribbed cloth with the three-panel design on front boards stamped in black, with gilt and black spine titles and decorations. Volume one is the primary binding with a double-ruled border on the back cover; volumes two and three are the secondary binding, with triple-ruled blind borders. Top edge uncut. Housed together in an elaborate drop-down box and chemise. Noticeable wear and soiling to bindings, with a good measure of soiling, staining, and some blistering to the cloth. Occasional spotting and staining to text. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Hinges starting. Bindings of volumes one and three very occasionally cracked, with hinges starting. A good set. Purdy, pages 31-35.
