Three octavo volumes. [2, blank], vi (i.e. viii), 303, [1, blank]; [2, blank], vi (i.e. viii), 297, [298], [2, ad]; [2, blank], vi (i.e. viii), 320 pages. Original brown cloth, Purdy's primary binding (BAL binding "B") with blind-stamped two-rule border on rear panel. Front board stamped in black, spine lettered in gilt with ornaments in gilt and black, rear board blindstamped with two-ruled border. Board edges mildly rubbed, spines modestly darkened and leaning slightly, spine ends chipped with minor loss. Text block a bit toned, occasionally foxed, some gutters over-opened with mull cloth exposed. A very good copy of one of the great examples of English Naturalism.
