First Edition, First Issue of Hardy's Most Famous Work

Thomas Hardy. Tess of the d'Ubervilles. A Pure Woman. Faithfully Presented by Thomas Hardy. In Three Volumes. [London: James R. Osgood, McIlvaine and Co., 1891]. First edition, first impression, with all issue points per Purdy. Three octavo volumes (4.875 x 7.5 inches). [viii], 264; [viii], 278, [2, blank]; [iv], 277 pages. No blanks in volume three. Publisher's smooth tan cloth with gilt spine titles and a gilt design of honeysuckle blossoms on two stems running from top to bottom. All three volumes chemise separately and housed together in a brown leather-backed slipcase with gilt spine titles. Moderate dust-soiling and rubbing to the boards, heavier to the last two volumes. Corners bumped, with a few bumps to the board edges. Noticeable rubbing to the spine gilt. Binding of volume two somewhat warped. Bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Hinges starting in volume one. Binding lightly cracked before the text in volume two, and in a couple of places in volume three. Overall, a very good set, rare in the first issue and in the publisher's binding. Purdy, pages 67-78.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
