First Edition, First Printing, of The Red Badge of Courage

Stephen Crane. The Red Badge of Courage. An Episode of the American Civil War. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1895. First edition, first printing, with page [235] advertising three works by Gilbert Parker, and the last page of advertisements (page [238]) ending with The Land of the Sun, by Christian Reid. Printed on laid paper with horizontal wire marks. Small octavo. [4], 233, [1, blank], [4, ads] pages. Original beige cloth, front cover and spine stamped in red, black and gilt. Chocolate endpapers. Top edge stained yellow. Spine a bit browned. Some rubbing to edges and foxing to boards. Ads a bit roughly opened at the fore-edge. Overall, a very good copy. Housed in a quarter brown morocco clamshell case (a bit rubbed).

The English critic, Sydney Brooks, was so enthralled by Crane's depictions of combat, he thought that Crane had fought in the Civil War, stating that if the novel was "altogether a work of imagination, unbased on personal experience, its realism would be nothing short of a miracle."

BAL 4071. Grolier, 100 American, 98. Williams and Starrett 3. From the James and Deborah Boyd Collection.
