Paul Scarron (1610-60), a burlesque writer notable for his appearance because he had been deformed and immobilized by rheumatism while yet a young man, was supported by the efforts of the queen, Anne d'Autriche. His works showed a rebellion against the artificiality of the contemporary literature and rejected the mythological and heroic elements in poetry and prose. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.
