    Rare Unexpurgated First Publically
    Printed Edition

Percy Bysshe Shelley. Queen Mab. London: Printed and published by R. Carlile, 1822. Second issue of the first publicly printed edition. Thin octavo. Poem to page 89, notes to page 82, plus the single leaf dedication page at back. Original drab boards affixed to rebacked hardcover backstrip. Label on backstrip only slightly chipped. Title, author name, and publication year visible on the nearly complete label. Pages generally good or very good. Marginalia and some other markings to the pages, primarily in pencil. Very good condition. This work was first printed privately in 1813, then published in a pirated edition by W. Clark in 1821, for which Clark subsequently received four months' imprisonment. Clark's notes and the final leaf carrying the suppressed dedication "To Harriet" are both present. Shelley had written that dedication for his first wife. It was privately printed in 1813 in a very small edition, and originally contained a poetical dedication to Harriet which Shelley was in the habit of cutting out in copies he gave to friends. Much to Shelley's consternation, this edition was printed by Clark without the poet's authorization, and, according to Granniss "some copies contain the dedication to Harriet (his first wife who had committed suicide in 1816), and in some, certain words and lines have been omitted." According to Graniss, "Clark's sheets fell into the hands of Carlile who issued them both in the original and mutilated forms, in 1822." This copy preserves the final leaf bearing the dedication 'To Harriet', which has often been removed, but has retained Clarke's imprint on the last leaf of text.
