    in the Original Cloth

    Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Scarlet Letter: A Romance. Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1850. First edition, first issue (with "reduplicate" for "repudiate" on page 21) and with four pages of ads dated March 1, 1850, inserted in the front. Title page printed in red and black. Octavo. [4, blank - actually the original front endleaves], iv, 322, [2, blank] pages. Original publisher's brown cloth boards ruled and stamped in blind, spine ruled in blind and stamped in gilt. Rebacked and recased, with the original spine preserved, boards worn and soiled, new endleaves, first two blanks chipped in upper inner corner, text toned, with occasional soiling, creasing and wear. Still, a good copy.
