First edition, first issue, with "reduplicate" on page 21 and four pages of publisher's ads (dated March 1, 1850) inserted between the front endleaves. One of only 2,500 copies printed. Octavo. iv, 322, [2, blank] pages. Title-page printed in black and red-orange. Publisher's full brown cloth, boards triple-ruled in blind and with blind central motif, spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Spine worn at edges with several small tears, boards with some edgewear and soiling, corners bumped, first several and last several leaves (including front ads and all endleaves) with some foxing, several gutters overopened. Some occasional thumbsoiling in text. Slightly skewed. Still, a very good copy of this classic of American literature, one of the most important of the nineteenth century. Chemised in slipcase.
