    More Information:

Nathaniel Hawthorne. Mosses from an Old Manse. London: Wiley and Putnam, 1846. First edition, first printing, London issue. Two octavo volumes. Publisher's full green cloth, boards and spines decoratively stamped in blind, spines lettered in gilt. Spines sunned, bindings somewhat rubbed and very slightly soiled, some thumbsoiling on endleaves and text, text with marginal foxing. Still, a bright, fine set. The rarest form of this title, only one of a few hundred sets of this (American sheets with London imprinted title-pages) sent to England. This was the first hardcover appearance of this title, only preceded by an American issue in wrappers earlier the same year.  BAL 7598. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.
