Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. The Life and Exploits of the Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha. Translated from the original Spanish... by Charles Jarvis, Esq. London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson and R. Dodsley, [1742]. Two volumes, quarto (11.1875 x 9 inches; 285 x 226 mm.). [xxiv], [8], xxxii, vi, [2], 88, [12], 355, [1, blank]; xii, 388 pages. Frontispiece and sixty-eight additional inserted plates; twenty-seven in first volume; forty-one in second. Majority engraved by Gerard Vander Gucht after John Vanderbank. Contemporary sprinkled calf boards, ruled in gilt with gilt fillet decoration and black-stamped inside dentelle. Both volumes rebacked with original backstrip laid down; spines decorated in gilt with five raised bands, with black, red and yellow morocco spine labels. Later endpapers. All edges stained red. Bindings coated with a clear finish reminiscent of polyurethane. Regular shelf wear; corners bumped; some small abrasions to boards. Dust soiling to top edges of text blocks. Normal faint, uneven age toning of text block; occasional scattered foxing, mostly marginal, and spot staining; some browning of plates, with frequent offsetting onto facing pages. Very good. First edition of the "Jarvis" translation, at the time of its publication the most scholarly and accurate translation into English. Lowndes, 401 ("An elegant edition").

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
