Description

The First Part of the 1608 Printing of Don Quixote - The Final Edition Corrected by Cervantes Himself

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Il Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha... Madrid: Juan de la Cuesta, 1608. The Third Madrid Printing of Don Quixote, published by the same printer who published the first edition in 1605. Part I only (the second part was not published until 1615). Octavo. [12], 277,[3, Tabula] leaves. Complete with the rare Tabula. Bound in later red cloth, elaborately stamped in blind. Three-quarters of the front board missing, spine and rear board heavily worn, title-page loose and quite chipped with loss and amateur tape reinforcements. The text is toned, somewhat brittle, soiled and chipped with some tears and animal damage. A fair copy. Still, a rare item. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell case. After the first edition of 1605, this is the most important edition of Don Quixote, and the last one corrected personally by Cervantes (although there is some debate as to this). There can be no doubt that this is known as the "academic" edition, and is the basis of all of the scholarly editions which followed. Its text is the basis of the text enjoyed by readers today. Palau 51982. Ruis 1549. PMM 111.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
