    Description

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Don Quixote de la Mancha. London: 1818. First edition illustrated thus.

More Information: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Don Quixote de la Mancha. London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1818. First edition illustrated thus. Four volumes, octavo. [2], 2, lxxxiv, 409, [1, blank]; [6], 395, [1, blank]; [6], xiii, [1], 432; [2], vi, 508 pages. Forty-eight total plates: twelve in first volume; eleven in second; thirteen in third; twelve in fourth. Head- and tail-pieces. Engravings based on paintings by Robert Smirke. Most illustrations with original tissue guards. Contemporary calf; fronts and backs ruled in gilt with gilt fillet decoration and blind-stamped inside dentelles; spines decorated in gilt with five raised bands, red and green morocco spine labels. Marbled endpapers. All edges trimmed and gilt. Regular edge wear and dust soiling to calf; scuffing with some surface scratches and spots of staining to boards, upper edges slightly toned; two strips of calf pulled up at front of second volume. Wear to hinges with first and fourth volume rebacked, original backstrips laid down; some slight chips, gouges and cracks to spine labels; attempted color correction to green labels has tinted gilt lettering. Normal rubbing to edges of text block with some slight loss of gilt. Occasional marginal foxing and spot soiling throughout interiors; plates often browned, mostly at margins with images unaffected; foxing, offsetting onto tissue. With book labels of Alexander Drew tipped to all front pastedowns. Very good. From the Illustrated Book Collection of David Salinas.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
