First edition with colophon dated "December, mdcccxcvi" in an early state wrapper with the period after the "Number One." (Gallatin & Oliver, p. 8). 53 pages and colophon. Deckled fore-edges. Title page in black and red. Green pictorial wraps housed in a custom made quarter leather and cloth slip case with five raised bands gilt title, author, and rules in compartments, "London 1897" at foot of case's spine. Slip case rubbed at extremities. Paper wraps are detached, small tears and chipping around the edges, creases and corner bends, lightly soiled and scuffed; spine paper loss, text block with upper right corner bend and small indentation in the lower margin; occasional foxing, smudges, and dampstains in the margins, else a good copy of the first edition in detached wraps.
