    The Autograph Edition, Signed as Samuel Clemens and Mark Twain

    Mark Twain. The Writings of Mark Twain - Autograph Edition. Hartford: The American Publishing Company, [1899-1907]. Special Autograph Edition, number 73 of 512 copies. Volume I is signed "S. L. Clemens / (Mark Twain)" on the limitation page. Twenty-five octavo volumes, complete (photo shows a sampling of volumes). Volume I contains an introductory essay titled "Biographical Criticism" which is signed at the end by the author, Brander Matthews. Frontispieces. Illustrations and photogravures throughout. Volume I bound in green half leather and marbled boards. Gilt lettering, floral decorations, and rules to spine. Five raised bands. Top edges gilt; fore-edges and bottom edges untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. The remaining twenty-four volumes have been recently uniformly rebound in half leather over various types of marbled paper-covered boards. Volume I has been professionally rebacked, retaining the original backstrip, with repairs made to extremities and reinforcing binding tape applied to hinges. Volume I is in very good condition. The recently rebound volumes have minor shelf wear, but are in overall fine condition.
