    Description

Mark Twain. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. London: Chatto and Windus, 1876. The true first edition, preceding the first American edition by about six months. Octavo (7.5 x 5.25 inches; 190 x 135 mm.). [viii], 341, [1, blank], [1, publisher's device], [1, blank] pages. Contemporary calf with titles stamped in gilt on morocco labels mounted between five raised bands on the spine. New pastedowns and endpapers. Slight lean to text block but otherwise externally very good; contents generally bright with a few small water stains at upper fore-edge. Still, a very good copy. According to BAL, "The text varies slightly from the American edition." The English edition appeared before the American edition in order to secure the British copyright. BAL 3367
