Mark Twain. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. London: Chatto and Windus, 1876. The true first edition, preceding the first American edition by about six months. Octavo (7.5 x 5.25 inches; 190 x 135 mm.). [viii], 341, [1, blank], [1, publisher's device], [1, blank] pages. Publisher's full red cloth with front cover and spine decoratively stamped in black and lettered in gilt. Rebacked with original spine laid down. Some toning, soiling to boards and spine (including some color correction to rear board), some rubbing to edges, hinges reinforced in the rebacking process, some minor soiling to endleaves, some toning and foxing to text. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
