Description
Mark Twain. Christian Science. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1907. First edition, mixed state, in the first state dust jacket, with the ads on the rear panel ending with The Jumping Frog. Octavo. [6], 362 pages + 3 photographic prints, including the frontispiece. Publisher's red cloth stamped and lettered in gilt, blind stamp to rear. Original printed dust jacket.This copy exhibits a mixed state of text, with the following issue points: frontispiece dated 1906 (first state), copyright page with 18 titles listed in the boxed advertisement (second state), six lines in the illustration list (second state), page 5 with a perfect "W" in line 14 (first state), page 3 with the "r" present on line 9 (second state), and page 123 with "Autobiography" corrected in line 2 (MacDonnell third state).
Condition: Minor edgewear, corners a touch bumped, some mottling along joints, head and tail pushed, spine rubbed. Text block edges toned, foxed, top edge soiled; contemporary Christmas gift inscription to front flyleaf recto, bookseller notations to same. A few corners creased, intermittent foxing to margins, slight offsetting to title from frontis. Dust jacket decoratively clipped, priced "$1.75" to spine; worn and rubbed, faintly soiled all-over, repaired along front fold, repair to title at head in facsimile, scattered staining, chipping at head and rear panel, upper joint split, a few closed tears to front panel. A very good book in a good dust jacket.
