First American edition, first issue, with the following points: page [13], the illustration captioned 'Him and another Man' is incorrectly listed as at p. 88 (BAL first state); page 57, the eleventh line from the bottom reads 'with the was' instead of 'with the saw' (BAL first state). MacDonnell's first state of 'Huck Decided' on page 9. Octavo. 366 pages. Inserted frontispiece portrait and wood-engraved text illustrations. The frontispiece portrait has the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Co., the tablecloth, or scarf, is clearly visible. Page 283 is mounted onto a cancel. Publisher's full green cloth, front board and spine decoratively stamped in gilt and black. Spine and front joint repaired and strengthened, spine a bit darkened, some rubbing and mild wear to binding, hinges repaired, offsetting from newspaper article to pages 282 and 283, some wear at edges of text, previous owner's two signatures on front free endpaper. Overall, a very good copy. Chemised in a quarter blue morocco clamshell case. Bookplate on chemise. BAL 3415. MacDonnell, Firsts Magazine, September 1998, pp. 29-35. The San Clemente Collection.
