    First American Edition, First Issue of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, with a Card Signed by Twain

    Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). With one hundred and seventy-four illustrations. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. With a signed card ("Saml. Clemens/Mark Twain" in purple ink) affixed beneath the half-title (card is approximately 1.75 x 3.25 inches). First American edition, first issue, with the following points: page [13], the illustration captioned 'Him and another Man' is incorrectly listed as at p. 88 (BAL first state); page 57, the eleventh line from the bottom reads 'with the was' instead of 'with the saw' (BAL first state). MacDonnell's first state of 'Huck Decided' on page 9. Octavo. 366 pages. Inserted frontispiece portrait and wood-engraved text illustrations. The frontispiece portrait has the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Co., the tablecloth, or scarf, is clearly visible. Page 283 is mounted onto a cancel. Publisher's full green cloth, front board and spine decoratively stamped in gilt and black. Joints skillfully repaired, spine tips and corners strengthened, some color correction to spine, corners, and a few other spots, some rubbing to binding, some minor intermittent foxing or thumbsoiling in text. Overall, a very good copy. Chemised in a quarter green morocco clamshell case.
