Description

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in the Rare Publisher's Sheep Binding

Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer¹s Comrade). With one hundred and seventy-four illustrations. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First American edition, first issue, with the following points: page [13], the illustration captioned "Him and another Man" is incorrectly listed as at p. 88 (BAL first state); page 57, the eleventh line from the bottom reads "with the was" instead of "with the saw" (BAL first state). MacDonnell's first state of "Huck Decided" on page 9. Octavo. 366 pages. Inserted frontispiece portrait and wood-engraved text illustrations. The frontispiece portrait has the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Co., the tablecloth, or scarf, is clearly visible. In publisher¹s full sheep binding. Rebacked to style in brown calf, with burgundy and black gilt morocco lettering labels (similar to the original publisher's binding). Boards professionally strengthened and re-cornered. Housed in a quarter blue morocco custom-made clamshell box. Some bowing, mild wear to boards. Page edges toned with light foxing to endpapers and preliminary pages. A few scattered pages show light thumb soiling, or creases. A very good example of this title in one of its rarest bindings (although Webster announced he was binding 2,500 in sheep, few have survived in collectable condition). BAL 3415. MacDonnell, Firsts Magazine, September 1998, pp. 29-35.
