Description

First Edition of the Great American Novel

Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). With One Hundred and Seventy-Four Illustrations. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First American edition, early issue. The following points identify this copy according to Blanck: the title-leaf is a cancel (Blanck's second state, the first state having never been seen in a printed book); on page [13], the illustration "Him and Another Man" listed as being on page 88 (Blanck's first state); on page 57, "...with the was..." (Blanck's first state); on page 155, the final "5" of the page number is absent (Blanck's first or second state, he was unable to determine the priority); the portrait frontispiece is Blanck's second state. With the first issue point as identified by Mac Donnell ("Decided" on page 9; Mac Donnell's article in Firsts Magazine, September 1998, renders some of Blanck's points moot, but they are mentioned here for the sake of continuity). Octavo. 366 pages. Portrait frontispiece inserted. Text illustrations by E.W. Kemble. Publisher's original illustrated green cloth binding, blocked in gilt and black. Spine darkened and worn, boards worn at extremities, several upper corners of text creased. With a neat contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper. Overall, a good copy in the original cloth.
