Description

    The Great American Novel

Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). With One Hundred and Seventy-Four Illustrations. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885.

First American edition, early issue, with the following issue points: title leaf is a cancel (BAL's second issue, the earliest issue available), page [13] BAL's first issue, page 57 BAL's first issue, page 238 BAL's third issue (the earliest possible in the cloth-bound issue), page 155 BAL's later issue, portrait frontispiece in BAL's first issue. Octavo. [2, blank], 366, [2, blank] pages. Portrait frontispiece inserted.

Publisher's full green cloth, front cover and spine decoratively stamped in black and gilt. Some mild wear to spine edges and corners, a few creases to front free endpaper. Still, a fine copy of this landmark novel with a predominance of the earliest issue points.

This novel, considered by many to be Twain's finest and the novel that best exemplifies the American spirit.

    BAL 3414.
