First American Edition, First Issue of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, with the Extremely Rare First State of the "Silas Phelps" Illustration on Page 283

Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First American edition. First printing with the text uncorrected at pages 9, 13 and 57. This copy has the very rare first state of the illustration on page 283, with a definite curve of Silas Phelps trousers, printed and bound before the infamous "ribald" defacement of the plate (after which the illustration was altered to put a straight line on Phelps' trousers, with only a handful of copies bound with the first state of this illustration). The copyright page is dated 1884. Page 155 is printed without the final "5" in the page number, although this does not prove whether or not this is an early issue of the book (as per MacDonnell). This copy without the inserted portrait frontispiece. Octavo. [2, blank], 366, [2, blank] pages. Rebound (somewhat amateurishly) in later full plain brown leather with later endleaves. Minor wear to binding, several text leaves with wear at edges and ink stains, stab-holes visible at gutters of text, free endleaves missing half of the leaf (neatly cut). A good copy, with the elusive first state of page 283. BAL 3415. MacDonnell, Firsts Magazine, September, 1998.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
