    Huck's Adventures

Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885.

First American edition, early issue, with these points: title-leaf is a cancel (BAL second state, the earliest state found in published copies); p. [13], illustration captioned "Him and Another Man" is listed at p. 88 (BAL first state); p. 57 has the misprint "with the was" (BAL first state); p. 155 with the second "5" of page number is missing (a later issue point in BAL which MacDonnell dismisses as being of no significance as far as issue priority (Firsts, p. 33)); p. 283 a cancel with the new rendering of Silas Phelps's trousers (BAL second state); and the portrait frontispiece has the Heliotype Printing Company imprint without the tablecloth (BAL second state). Also, "Huck Decided" instead of "Huck Decides" under "Chapter VI" on p. [9], a first issue point per MacDonnell (Firsts, p. 31). Octavo (8.375 x 6.375 inches; 212 x 162 mm.). 366 pages. With 174 Intertextual illustrations by E. W. Kemble. Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard.

Near-contemporary half brown morocco over brown marbled boards rebacked to style. Spine lettered and tooled in gilt. Marbled endpapers and edges. Occasional light staining and foxing throughout, primarily marginal, with a few thumb smudges. Boards abraded, board edges rubbed, corners slightly bumped, and a minor, 0.25 inch indentation to front board's lower outer edge. A half-inch closed tear to bottom edge of frontispiece. Overall, a good copy of Twain's masterpiece, and the novel Ernest Hemingway described famously as the work from which "all modern American literature comes."

    BAL 3415. Johnson, Twain, p. 43. Grolier, 100 American, 87.
