DescriptionMark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First U. S. edition, first issue, with the following points: page , the illustration captioned 'Him and another Man' is incorrectly listed as at p. 88 (BAL first state); page 57, the eleventh line from the bottom reads 'with the was' instead of 'with the saw' (BAL first state). MacDonnell's first state of 'Huck Decided' instead of "Huck Decides" under "Chapter VI" on p. . Octavo. 366 pages. Inserted frontispiece portrait and wood-engraved text illustrations by E.W. Kemble. Title page with copyright 1884. The frontispiece portrait, which includes the tissue guard, has the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Co. (the tablecloth, or scarf, not visible). Page 283 with the straight fly (page is integral, not mounted onto a cancel). Publisher's half brown morocco over marbled boards, spine ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, marbled endleaves. Binding worn at edges and joints, text toned with soiling throughout. A few gutters overopened. Still, a very good copy in the least common publisher's binding, not usually found unsophisticated. BAL 3415.
More Information: BAL states that the original printing of this book was 20,000 in cloth, 2,500 in sheep, and 500 in morocco (although it was later determined that there were closer to 30,000 in the first printing, and that the ratio of distribution of bindings was proportional to the bindings stated above). MacDonnell notes that this binding is prone to drying and cracking; this copy is worn, but has never been repaired or restored, making it a real rarity.
