S. edition, first issue, with the following points: page [13], the illustration captioned 'Him and another Man' is incorrectly listed at page 88 (BAL first state); page 57, the eleventh line from the bottom reads "with the was" instead of "with the saw" (BAL first state); Silas Phelps illustration on page 283 in suppressed first state with a curved fly. MacDonnell's first state of "Huck Decided" instead of "Huck Decides" under "Chapter VI" on page [9]. Octavo. 366 pages. Third state portrait frontispiece inserted with illustrated frontis and profuse intertextual illustrations by E. W. Kemble. Publisher's half-leather over marble paper covered boards, gilt titles on spine. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Rebacked with original spine laid down. Boards somewhat rubbed, board edges mildly worn abraded and showing at corners. Text block lightly toned and foxed on edges, hinges repaired with cloth adhesive, occasional faint thumbprints. Very good.More Information: BAL states that the original printing of this book was 20,000 in cloth, 2,500 in sheep, and 500 in morocco (although it was later determined that there were closer to 30,000 in the first printing, and that the ratio of distribution of bindings was proportional to the bindings stated above).
