    More Information:

La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680) moralist author of the Maximes. "They are clear and elegant in style and remarkable for the penetration and subtlety of the portraits of persons with whom he was associated in his intrigues.... The work is a collection of some 500 gnomic sentences in which the author analyses the motives of human conduct with merciless penetration. While he recognizes in rare cases the existence of pure virtue and disinterested sentiments, he finds them tainted, almost universally, with some element of self-love or interested motive." [OCFL]. Morvan de Bellegarde (1648-1734) became a Jesuit and remained in the society for sixteen or seventeen years. He quit the society over his attachment to Cartesianism and tried to earn his living with the pen. He translated the works of Church fathers, the classical, and book of travels. He also authored a series of works on mores modeled after La Rochefaucauld including this on ridicule. He is remembered for his easy and elegant style. La Rochefoucauld: Tchemerzine VII, 62. Morvan: Not in STCN, See Cioranescu 50639 (1696 ed.)

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
