DescriptionJohn Milton. [John Martin, Illustrator and Engraver]. Paradise Lost. London: Septimus Prowett, 1827. Imperial Quarto edition. Two large quarto volumes. Approximately 14 x 10.25 inches. [vi], 228; [iv], 218 pages. Complete with twenty-four mezzotint plates by Martin. Original tissue guards for twenty-three of the plates. Bound with half-titles. Contemporary full red straight-grain morocco, board decoratively ruled and paneled in blind and gilt, with gilt central floral motifs, spines ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, blue-coated endleaves. Spines just a bit toned, binding worn at joints and edges, some wear and scuffing to boards, rear hinge of volume II starting, light soiling to endleaves. Text and plates foxed. Still, a very good copy of this impressive work, one of the most significant illustrated literary publications of the nineteenth century.
More Information: "...some of the earliest mezzotints to have been made using soft steel rather than copper and were the first illustrations of Milton's epic work to have been made in the mezzotint medium... They are without doubt one of the most significant series of British book illustration ever to have been produced." Campbell, John Martin, 1789-1854 Creation of Light, p. 515.
