Description

John Dryden. All for Love... London: 1678. First edition of Dryden's adaptation of Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra.

    More Information:

John Dryden. All for Love, or, The World Well Lost. A Tragedy, As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal; And Written in Imitation of Shakespeare's Stile. London: Tho. Newcomb for Henry Herringman, 1678. First edition of Dryden's adaptation of Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra. Small quarto. [xx], 78, [1, Epilogue], [1, blank] pages. Bound in nineteenth-century half brown calf over marbled boards, spine ruled in blind, red gilt morocco lettering label. Binding quite worn, joints starting, some chipping to spine, hinges cracking, text trimmed a bit close at top with some minor loss, text foxed and soiled. Still, a very good copy of this rare adaptation of Shakespeare.

Dryden "omits whatever in the original story is shocking and repulsive from the romantic point of view.... The best pieces of All for Love cannot, of course, challenge comparison with the best pieces of Shakespeare ... but the best passages of this play, and, what is more, its general facture and style, equal, with certain time-allowance, the best things of Beaumont and Fletcher, and therefore the best things of almost any English tragedian save Shakespeare." (Saintsbury).
