    First "Uncle Remus" Book

Joel Chandler Harris. Uncle Remus. His Songs and Sayings. The Folk-Lore of the Old Plantation. With Illustrations by Frederick S. Church and James H. Moser. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1881. First edition, BAL first state, of the author's first book (with "presumptive" in the last line on page 9, and the advertisements on page [233] beginning "New Books. A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine"). Twelvemo (7.4375 x 4.9375 inches; 189 x 125 mm.). 231, [1, blank], [8, publisher's advertisements] pages. Eight wood-engraved plates (including frontispiece), wood-engraved title vignette, and fifteen wood-engraved text illustrations. Original green fine diagonal-ribbed cloth. Front cover ruled and pictorially stamped in black and stamped in gilt with a "Brer Rabbit" vignette; back cover ruled in blind; and spine ruled, lettered, and pictorially stamped in gilt. White endpapers printed in gray-green with a butterfly pattern. Binding lightly rubbed; cloth lightly frayed at corners and spine extremities, with a few tiny chips to spine extremities; a few tiny holes in the cloth along the joints. A few gatherings becoming loose. Three-quarter-inch tear from outer margin of pages 75/76, with a small piece missing, but not affecting text; a few additional tiny marginal tears. Slight browning to pages 96 and 97 from an inserted item now removed; additional browning to upper corner of page 132 where a bookmark once rested, and to outer margin of plate facing page 164. Occasional light soiling and a few small stains. Some corners lightly creased. Previous owner's ink signature on the front flyleaf: Nettie Stuart Hoffman. Overall, a very good copy, with the cloth still bright.
