Appleton and Company, 1881. First edition, BAL first state, of the author's first book (with "presumptive" in the last line on page 9, and the advertisements on page [233] beginning "New Books. A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine"). Twelvemo (7.4375 x 4.9375 inches; 189 x 125 mm.). 231, [1, blank], [8, publisher's advertisements] pages. White endpapers printed in gray-green with a butterfly pattern. Binding lightly rubbed; cloth lightly frayed at corners and spine extremities, with a few tiny chips to spine extremities; a few tiny holes in the cloth along the joints. A few gatherings becoming loose. Three-quarter-inch tear from outer margin of pages 75/76, with a small piece missing, but not affecting text; a few additional tiny marginal tears. Slight browning to pages 96 and 97 from an inserted item now removed; additional browning to upper corner of page 132 where a bookmark once rested, and to outer margin of plate facing page 164. Overall, a very good copy, with the cloth still bright.
