James Fenimore Cooper. The Last of the Mohicans. A Narrative of 1757. Philadelphia: H. C. Carey & L. Lea, 1826. First edition, with all textual points as laid out in BAL and State A of copyright notice in second volume. Twelvemo in sixes (7.75 x 4.5 inches; 198 x 115 mm.). xi, [1, blank], 282, [2, blank]; [4], 289, [5, blanks] pages. First volume in later paper-covered boards designed to emulate publisher's boards, second volume in original publisher's boards, rebacked, both with later paper spine labels; text block edges untrimmed; second volume with original endpapers. Minor shelf wear to newer binding; publisher's binding chipping along edges and at corners with general, expected wear and rubbing, along with some minor staining and tidemarks. First volume endpapers foxed; previous owner book label and bookseller's ticket at front pastedown of second volume, as well as some scattered penciling; foxing and faint tidemarks to second volume endpapers; both volumes with hinges repaired. Text blocks unevenly toned; some light browning along edges, with evidence of wear and handling along untrimmed edges; previous ownership signatures (two in first volume, one in second) at heads of title leaf and facing pages; foxing and faint, marginal spot-soiling and tidemarks scattered fairly consistently throughout interiors. Still, very good. BAL 3833.
