James Fenimore Cooper. The Last of the Mohicans. A Narrative of 1757. Philadelphia: H. C. Carey & I. Lea, 1826. First edition with the folio on page seventy-one and the second i in folio vii in the first volume both present; second volume with the blank conjugate leaf [1]², copyright notice in the first state with "a Book" on the fifth line. Two volumes; octavo (7.75 x 4.5 inches; 195 x 115 mm.). xi, [1, blank], 282, [4, blank]; [ii], [2, blank], 289, [3, blank] pages. Early paper-covered boards, possibly original in a different variant, blue instead of the usual gray; rebacked to style in paper with new paper labels, with sealant applied to backstrips and board edges; page edges untrimmed. Board edges worn; covers soiled; paper labels browned; spine ends pushed. Volume II text browned and brittle (possibly caused by early water damage, gutter margins slightly less affected) with some substantial closed tears and chips (including a tears across the title-leaf); a couple of leaves silked; both volumes somewhat foxed. Contemporary ownership signature to both title-pages. Good, housed in a custom clamshell case. BAL 3833.
