    Princess Elizabeth's Copy of the First Edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson

    First edition, second corrected state, with "give" on line 10 of page 135. Two quarto volumes. xii, [16], 516, [16, Principal Corrections and Additions, dated 1793]; [ii], 588, [2, leaf of "Fac Similes of Dr. Johnson's hand writing"], [17-42, Corrections and Additions. Volume II] pages. Engraved frontispiece portrait in Volume I. Two plates inserted in Volume II, facing pages 92 and 588. With an extra inserted frontispiece in Volume II of the scarce Trotter engraving titled, "Dr. Johnson in his Travelling Dress as described in Boswell's Tour" (dated 1786).

    Nineteenth-century brown leather with gilt spine titles on black leather labels. Sprinkled edges. Marbled endpapers. Rebacked. Some noticeable wear, rubbing and abrading to the boards. Corners exposed and bumped. Front board to both volumes detached; first tearing the endpaper and a preliminary, second volume after the endpaper. Rear boards with broken hinges. Minor indentations to text block with minute tears. Bookplate to front pastedown of Volume I. Minor occasional foxing and marginalia.

    A wonderful copy from the library of Princess Elizabeth of England (1770-1840), seventh child of King George III, with her initial on the covers and her autographed initials on the title pages.
