Twelvemo (4.875 x 3 inches; 124 x 75 mm). xxxv, [1, blank], 243, [1] pages. Four engraved plates by Girardet, Halbou, after J. M. Moreau, and by de Longueil, after Vernet. Translated by Jane Dalton. Bound [by Derome] in full burgundy morocco. Covers with gilt triple fillet border; smooth spine divided into six compartments by decorative gilt rules, lettered in gilt in one compartment, a decorative gilt center tool in the rest. Two octavo volumes (5.875 x 3.875 inches; 150 x 98 mm). xii, 191, [1, blank]; [4], 158, [2, blank] pages. Extra-illustrated with plates from several illustrated editions, some colored, most in multiple states, including proofs before lettering, some on India paper mounted. The plates include the engraved frontispiece portrait by Dequevauviller; color medallion plates by Guyot after Dutailly. Bound by Chambolle-Duru (stamp-signed in gilt on front doublure) in full green crushed levant morocco. Covers elaborately panelled in gilt; spines decoratively panelled in gilt in six compartments with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in two compartments and dated in gilt at foot; board edges with double gilt fillet; turn-ins decoratively ruled in gilt; purple morocco doublures with single gilt fillet border enclosing a foliate gilt panel; beige silk liners decorated with pink and green flowers; marbled endleaves; all edges gilt. Armorial bookplate. ESTC T70721.

    [And:] Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. Autograph Letter Signed, addressed "Au Citoyen Le Danois" (André Bazile Le Danois de La Soisière), a member of the Council of Ancients. Dated 26 February 1799, with integral address leaf attached. Small tear to upper left corner where seal was attached, small archival repair to upper right corner, neither impacting any writing. Four Postal stamps present on integral address leaf. Actual text is 25 lines in Saint-Pierre's hand, responding to a letter by Le Danois about a meeting, countering his proposed date of the 8th with the 10th. He then goes on to discuss how he was tricked by a man that he had not seen for 20 years, as well as by a young woman. He defends himself that he in no way was compromising the interests of the Republic. The letter is dated "Paris, ce 7 ventose an 7" (February 26th, 1799);

    [And:] E. F. Bonaventure. Invoice circa 1895, with a handwritten description of the three volumes in purple ink, describing Paul and Mary as a "Unique copy in an exquisite Binding by Chambolle extra illustrated with rare set all proofs before letters."
